What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that focuses on creating machines and software that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. These tasks include learning, problem-solving, understanding language, recognizing images, and making decisions.

Instead of being programmed with fixed instructions for every situation, AI systems are designed to analyze data, find patterns, and improve over time. For example, a spam filter learns to recognize unwanted emails by analyzing large numbers of messages. Similarly, voice assistants like Siri or Google Assistant understand spoken language using AI algorithms.

AI works using models and algorithms trained on large datasets. These systems learn from examples. For instance, if an AI is trained to recognize cats in photos, it studies thousands or millions of images labeled “cat” to learn common features such as ears, whiskers, and shapes.

There are different types of AI. Narrow AI is designed for specific tasks, like recommendation systems on Netflix or navigation apps. General AI, which would think and reason like a human across many tasks, does not yet exist.

AI is used in many industries, including healthcare, finance, transportation, and entertainment. It helps doctors detect diseases, improves online shopping recommendations, and powers self-driving car research.
